Sprinkle With Serenity : How To Clean Your Shower Head

Getting under the showers after a long day is a rejuvenating moment all of us look forward to. However, we often overlook the importance of doing regular checkups on the most essential part of the shower — the shower head. Little do we know, that on most days, it isn’t just water that could be seeping through those tiny holes.

Or perhaps, you may have noticed that the water current from the shower is a little unusual. Before racking up a costly bill to have the entire shower device replaced, here is how you can clean the shower head at home!

How Often Should You Clean the Shower Head

If your shower head has never been cleaned or there’s a significant drop in water flow, it is best to have it cleaned immediately. Cleaning out the shower head once a month is ideal to prevent the growth of bacteria and mould inside the shower head.

Some simple home remedies you can use to clean the shower head are:

Vinegar

This classic remedy never disappoints when it comes to cleaning.

Simply pour enough vinegar into a bowl or container that could fit the size of your shower head. Carefully remove the shower head and let it soak in the vinegar for up to several hours or overnight. This thoroughly removes accumulated dirt inside the nozzles of the shower head.

Once the soaking is done, rinse the shower head before reinstalling it and letting it run on the highest temperature to rinse out any remaining dirt and mineral deposits. For a more thorough cleaning, dip a toothpick in baking soda mixture to unclog the nozzles or just for a final polishing.

Do take note that this method isn’t advised for brass shower heads as there is a risk of the acidity damaging the nickel-coated finishing.

Lemon Juice

With natural acids that easily dissolve mineral residue, lemon juice makes a great substitute to vinegar if not a trusty remedy itself.

Simply mix lemon juice with warm water and let the shower head soak for up to several hours or overnight. This method works similarly as that of vinegar.

If you don’t prefer waiting for the shower head to soak, mix the lemon juice with baking soda or some salt to create a paste-like mixture. Use an old toothbrush to dip into the paste as you scrub the shower head with it. Lastly, run the shower at the highest temperature to fully rinse out any dirt and residue.

General Tips for Maintaining the Shower Head in Good Condition

  • Once slight changes are noticed in the water flow, immediately do a thorough cleaning of the shower head as mineral deposits only get worse over time.
  • We recommend installing a metal shower head over a plastic one as plastic made shower heads are more prone to mould growth.
  • Have an air ventilator fixed and regularly turn it on after using the shower to absorb any excessive moisture in the air. This actively prevents the growth of mould and mildew in the bathroom surroundings, especially in delicate areas such as the shower head nozzle.
  • Instead of removing the shower head for soaking cleaning methods, you can also submerge the shower head in a plastic bag containing the cleaning solution and use a rubber band to keep them in place. This also effectively removes accumulated bacteria and residue and can be easily rinsed afterwards.

With these effective and versatile methods, using all-time trustable cleaning remedies that can be easily made at home, it is safe to say that we can now shower in clean, smooth-running shower water with peace of mind under a squeaky clean shower head.

May these tips bring you a smoother cleaning process, with a test run post cleaning to look forward to after.

Empower tranquility with a shower.
